Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App

It’s an app for those who would love to spend New Years in Times Square but would not love to stand out in the freezing cold with no easy access to bathrooms for a good 12 hours, just to secure a decent enough spot so that the ball looks larger than a marble come the magic hour.

The organizers of the big event have created their own app, the “Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App.” It has a countdown clock, tons of information about the history of the event in Times Square and information, like the show schedule and maps for those who do plan to be at the actual event. There will also be a live video stream of the festivities on the big night.

Users can submit to submit special New Year’s photos through the app that could be chosen to be shown on the big screen in Times Square. That app, for iPhones and Androids, is free.

Noisemaker Apps

There are lots of noisemaker apps for whatever device you have, so that you don’t have to waste your breath on the real thing. The free ones, like “Noisemaker” for the iPhone, offer basic functionality. Those that cost a buck or two, like the “New Year’s Blowout Horn” for the iPhone, typically offer some added features. One has users actually blow into the iPhone‘s mic to activate the noisemaker.

Toasting Apps

Finally, there are lots and lots of way to raise a virtual toast on New Year’s. The folks at Waterford, who line the New Year’s ball with their legendary glass each year, have a free “Clink-Clink” application for the iPhone. Two users literally bump, or clink their devices together and exchanges toasts.

Two free ones are for Android phones. “New Year’s Eve Toast” allows you to choose from a few dozen drinks which you can tap, each has its own unique clinking sound. The “Champagne” app is perfect for anyone in Times Square, since police won’t allow bottles in. Just “unwrap” the app, shake it up and pop the cork.
